Frequently asked questions
DTF transfer FAQs
What is a DTF transfer?
A direct-to-film transfer is a full-color graphic printed onto coated film, typically with a white ink underbase and powdered adhesive. After curing, it is positioned on a compatible garment and bonded using controlled heat and pressure.
What fabrics work with DTF transfers?
DTF is commonly used on cotton, polyester, cotton-poly blends, fleece, canvas, and many performance fabrics. Coated, waterproof, dye-prone, highly textured, or heat-sensitive items require testing. Compatibility depends on the complete garment—not just the fiber label.
Do I need a heat press?
A commercial heat press is strongly recommended. It provides the stable temperature, flat contact, repeatable dwell time, and controllable pressure needed for a reliable bond. Household irons have hot and cool zones and make repeatability difficult.
What artwork file should I upload?
Use a transparent PNG at final size and ideally 300 DPI, or a supported vector format. Embed or outline fonts when appropriate, eliminate stray pixels, and avoid screenshots or small images downloaded from social media. Confirm current file requirements on the selected product page.
What is a gang sheet?
A gang sheet is a larger film canvas holding multiple designs. It may contain duplicate logos, several sizes, different customer jobs, inside labels, or sleeve marks. Efficient nesting reduces blank film, but each graphic still needs enough room for handling and cutting.
Should I use the builder or upload a completed sheet?
Use the builder when you have individual transparent files and want an easier visual layout workflow. Use upload your gang sheet when you can create one exact-size, production-ready canvas in design software and take responsibility for every placement.
Can I order just one transfer?
DTF is practical for samples and low quantities because it avoids color-by-color screen setup. Product-specific minimums may apply, so review the ordering option that best matches the design dimensions and count.
How quickly can SpeedE Transfers print my order?
Same-day printing is available for qualifying orders. Artwork readiness, order size, current volume, product selection, and cutoff time matter. Shipping time begins after production; choose Austin pickup when available or a carrier service that supports the required in-hands date.
What temperature and time should I use?
Follow the instructions supplied with your SpeedE Transfers order. A single universal setting is unreliable because the transfer system, fabric, garment coating, press calibration, and pressure all influence bonding. Test unfamiliar blanks before production.
Is the transfer hot peel or cold peel?
Peel timing is determined by the film and production system. SpeedE Transfers products may support hot or cold peeling where specified. Use the instructions for the exact product; peeling too early or too late for that film can disrupt release.
How long will a DTF print last?
A correctly manufactured and applied transfer on a compatible garment is designed for repeated wear and washing. Lifespan varies with application, fabric, abrasion, garment stretch, detergent, water temperature, dryer heat, and user behavior. No responsible durability estimate ignores those variables.
How should customers wash DTF-decorated apparel?
Follow the garment’s legally required care label first. In general, gentle washing, turning the garment inside out, avoiding harsh treatment, and limiting high dryer heat can help protect decorated surfaces. A seller should establish care directions through testing of the actual garment and decoration combination.
Why is my transfer lifting?
Check for insufficient or uneven pressure, inaccurate temperature, too-short dwell time, moisture, an obstructing seam, incompatible garment treatment, incorrect peel timing, or a missed finishing press. Stop after the first failure and document the press, blank, settings, and symptom before contacting support.
Why is there a faint box or unwanted dots?
Your file may include a nearly transparent background, shadow, matte, or stray pixels. These elements can receive white ink and adhesive. Inspect the file against several contrasting colors at 100% zoom, remove unwanted content, and export again with true transparency.
Can DTF print bright colors on dark shirts?
Yes. The white ink underbase supports color opacity on dark garments. Exact color appearance can still vary with the source file, color profile, ink system, underbase, garment color, and display calibration. Order a physical sample when brand color is critical.
What transfer size should I order?
Measure the actual printable area and judge the design’s proportions. Wide artwork and tall artwork of the same nominal size feel different. Create appropriate adult, youth, toddler, pocket, sleeve, and neck-label versions rather than forcing one size across every placement.
Is DTF better than screen printing?
DTF is often more efficient for detailed color, personalization, short runs, and mixed designs. Screen printing can offer strong economics and a desirable finish for large quantities with limited spot colors. Compare total setup, labor, garment, art, quantity, and deadline.
What is UV DTF, and can it go on shirts?
UV DTF is an adhesive graphic process for suitable hard, smooth objects such as selected packaging, cups, signs, and promotional products. It is not the same as garment DTF and is not intended to be heat-pressed onto shirts. Test the actual hard surface for adhesion and end-use suitability.
Does SpeedE Transfers offer wholesale pricing and nationwide shipping?
Yes. SpeedE Transfers supports wholesale-oriented production and ships across the United States, with local pickup available in Austin. For repeat or high-volume needs, contact the team with sheet size, estimated volume, frequency, artwork type, and deadline.
